Journalists implored to report responsibly during elections

12 Mar Journalists implored to report responsibly during elections

Making its presentation at a three day workshop organized by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) called upon media houses to play their role as the fourth Estate through reportage that is fair, factual and objective.
The major call was for the media to be pacifiers and critical stake holders in to the country’s pursuit to have free, fair and credible general elections to be held sometime this year.

The workshop was on development of voter education campaigning materials for inspection of the voters role, nomination and polling which are part electoral cycles.

Highlighting on electoral reportage, the Commission called upon media practitioners to desist from hate speech and inflammatory reportage that could inflame the political and election environment.

The Commission noted that, as a critical stake holder, the media could to a larger extent help in the holding of a credible election.
The media was called upon to be guided by Statutory Instrument 33 of 2008 and media guidelines during the election period.
